Heartworm Disease Resource Task Force

The Association of Shelter Veterinarians and American Heartworm Society joined forces in 2014 to discuss the prevention, treatment, and management of heartworm disease in animal shelters. As a starting point, a survey was conducted to characterize current practices in Heartworm Disease Management in North American Shelters.

On September 11, 2017, the American Heartworm Society and ASV published "best practices" to help stop heartworm transmission via transported dogs. Click here to download PDF.

In January 2015, the Heartworm Disease Resource Task Force was formed with the following objectives:

  • Identify current practices regarding heartworm disease management in animal shelters
  • Produce informational documents on canine and feline heartworm disease
  • Produce a series of educational brochures for distribution to adopters
