The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences is now accepting applications for the Maddie’s Post-DVM Fellowship. The successful candidate will have a passion for shelter medicine and this position would be ideal for a veterinarian who is looking for training to facilitate a career in shelter medicine. This is a 12-month position based at the state-of-the-art PAWS Chicago Lurie Family Spay/Neuter Clinic facilities. The program will provide a DVM graduate with advanced clinical training in shelter medicine, specifically in areas of population medicine, infectious disease, animal welfare, preventative medicine and high volume spay/neuter. The Maddie’s post-DVM fellow will also work with senior DVM students from Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine while they extern at PAWS Chicago. An independent shelter-based research project will also be undertaken as part of the Fellowship with support from a faculty mentor from the Purdue University Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. The research project will culminate in a paper submitted to a peer-reviewed journal at the conclusion of the fellowship and support is available for the Fellow to present the work at a national veterinary meeting. A 45-minute seminar at the Purdue School of Veterinary Medicine on the chosen topic of research is required for completion of the 12 month fellowship. Applicants must have a DVM or equivalent degree and be currently licensed to practice in Illinois or eligible to apply for an Illinois license. Preference will be given to veterinarians with at least 2 years post-doctoral experience. A certificate will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the program. Job Summary: This position oversees the Behavior group in orchestrating services to shelter cats and dogs, including behavioral assessments, supervision of rehabilitation programs, progress reports, euthanasia recommendations, adoptability criteria and developing the strategic direction of the Behavior group. Ideally, this position would also be involved in assessing research/data in order to apply best practice techniques to our shelter’s behavior modification programs. Job Responsibilities: Supervise Behavior staff activities and operations; general managerial and organizational duties, including supervising behavior modification programs, monitoring animals’ behavioral progress and making adoptability recommendations, implementing behavioral enrichment programs, budget development, performance appraisals. Evaluate animals for shelter intake against adoptability and rehabilitation criteria, including animals sourced from Humane Law Enforcement, Owner Relinquishment, and transfers from outside shelters/rescue groups.Help to develop and implement behavioral enrichment and rehabilitation programs for animals in shelter, both canine and feline.Have a good command of how to assess current research and data in order to incorporate best practice techniques into the shelter’s b-mod programs. Participate in Animal Health and Welfare Committee; attend weekly meetings in addition to Behavior Group meetings to monitor each animal’s progress. Develop and oversee training class program for shelter dog classes. Advise help-line and email callers, and serve as an information source for Behavior Counselors responding to outside behavior queries. Coordinate and/or perform telephone consultations and private training sessions when indicated, for adopters (both pre- and post-adoption).Train shelter staff and volunteers in animal behavior (dog walking, socialization, correct use of walking equipment, safe handling practices etc.).Develop written materials for Behavior Group (protocols, information sheets, data sheets, etc.) to distribute to the public and to adopters. Involvement in special projects as necessary.Support Media & Communications as an ASPCA designated expert in Behavior.
